In The Venue, Salt Lake City Imogen Heap Salt Lake City, Utah

Just recently I was given a great opportunity to go and see Imogen Heap in concert thanks to EventChaser. Held at In The Venue in down town Salt Lake City, Utah I was thrilled and a little nervous about attending as it would be my first time seeing her in concert.

Formerly known as Bricks nightclub, In The Venue is located near the heart of Salt Lake City. With the bus station just across the street and access to the city tracks, concert goers have great alternatives for transportation to this small but popular music venue. If you are driving your own car I would suggest getting to the event as early as possible. In The Venue’s parking space is minimal at best and was overflowing by the time my sister-in-law and I had arrived.

If you do arrive decently early you can head down to the Gateway mall for a little pre-concert shopping or for a bite to eat. Personally I would suggest checking out Happy Sumo or Thaifoon both which are located in the Gateway shopping center. My husband and I frequent both places when given the chance and are never disappointed with the food.

If you are early enough you can also try and catch a movie at the Megaplex 12 Theater, again located in the Gateway shopping center. If you are not looking to do much more than eat and head straight to your concert, the Honk Kong Tea House and Restaurant located right next to In The Venue would be an ideal choice. I have never eaten there myself but after gazing into its windows while we waited in line to get into the concert, I’ve a mind to try it out.

After spending about 10-15 minutes making our way to the entrance, my sister-in-law and I were finally able to step foot into the building. Upon doing so we immediately noticed that the small space in front of the stage was already filled with the early birds waiting for the opening act. As I wasn’t inclined to push my way through just yet we decided to head over to the section of In The Venue that hosts the bar.

We grabbed ourselves two Corona’s at a hefty $4.50 a pop and perched ourselves on the stools to talk and watch people as they entered. Although the prices for the drink weren’t what I would have liked to shell out normally, the bartenders were friendly and prompt with their service.

While we were deciding where to park ourselves afterwards, the opening acts began. I had never heard of Tim Exile or Back Ted-n-Ted before and wasn’t entirely interested in sitting and listening to them at first so we made our way upstairs to the balcony for a breathe of air. By this time In The Venue was already packed and maneuvering our way around was a bit difficult.

For those of you that like a quiet spot to collect yourselves, the balcony is definitely the place to do so. We could not hear one thing from inside even though they had clear vinyl windows situated to watch while you a having a smoke.

We really wanted to find a place on the balconies over-looking the bar and the stage but were hard pressed to find an open spot. In The Venue is standing room only which makes it quite the pain to relax and enjoy fully.

As unfortunate as it was to find ourselves standing in the back of In The Venue near the entrance, we found ourselves enjoying Tim Exile and the atmosphere that he created with his stage presence and funky mix of djing and play on sounds. I couldn’t help but be awed by the scenery on stage; in the middle was a large, white art deco tree that loomed over the instruments and performers while lights twinkled in the backdrops. It perfectly complimented Imogen Heap as she took the stage to perform.

Imogen Heap’s voice was as amazing if not more so than her cd’s. When she came out, the room erupted in applause and my heart jumped a little with excitement. I enjoyed how she talked to the audience between sets and found it pretty amusing that she as much as everyone else was disappointed with how the layout for In The Venue didn’t allow for the greatest concert-going experience. Being forced to stand overtly close to other people and straining to see the stage was in my opinion worth it to see Imogen Heap in concert.

In The Venue may not have been the greatest place to enjoy a concert but overall I had a good time. Thank you Event Chasers and Razorgator for giving me the opportunity and experience of seeing Imogen Heap in concert. One of these days I hope to do so again.
