Sometimes the hype is justified! The debut from Them Crooked Vultures dropped Tuesday, November 17, and to say the album rocks is an understatement! Thirteen tracks of pure, unadulterated rock and roll, and proving that every now and then the “supergroup” concept works. Them Crooked Vultures have two more shows in North America this week!
Them Crooked Vultures
When Dave Grohl stated in an interview with Mojo magazine back in 2005 that he was interested in doing a project with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones, the music world was immediately tuned in, knowing this could be a barnstormer of a group. Dave Grohl on the drums brings his elements of melodic hard rock, punk rock and grunge to the table, a la the Foo Fighters, Scream and Nirvana. Josh Homme on vocals and guitar adds in his brand of in-your-face rock and roll along with some old school stoner rock, a la Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss.
Then we have one of the true legends of rock and roll. Whether you consider the mighty Led Zeppelin heavy metal or just simple rock and roll, there is no denying the overwhelming influence they have on music to this day. John Paul Jones was the quiet, driving force in that band, perfectly complementing the screeching yet beautiful vocals of Robert Plant, the incredible drumming style of John Bonham and the wizardry of Jimmy Page on the guitar. Together Jones and Bonham created one of rock and roll’s all-time best rhythm sections. The power and groove he adds to Them Crooked Vultures is stunning.
Rounding out the band for live shows is Alain Johannes on rhythm guitar, who also has played with Queens of the Stone Age, in addition to work with Eleven and Spinnerette.
Them Crooked Vultures live!
Since their “secret” debut show at The Metro in Chicago once Lollapalooza 2009 was over with, Them Crooked Vultures have already established a big fan base and played some big festivals, including both the acclaimed Reading and Leeds Festivals in the U.K. Most bands do not have a lot of original material from the get-go, particularly for their debut show, but the set at The Metro featured 80 minutes of original work.
You can hear all that new material on their self-titled debut. This is one album with plenty of mid-tempo, bone-crushing material. You will not be disappointed!
Them Crooked Vultures will be playing this Thursday at the Fox Theater in Oakland, then wrap up their North American swing before heading to Europe on Saturday, November 21 at the stunning Paramount Theatre in Seattle. If you live in Seattle do not wait, tickets are extremely scarce for this show.
Great album, great band and sure to be two more great shows. Don’t miss out on Them Crooked Vultures!
