Concert at Saltair in Salt Lake, Rob Zombie Rob Zombie rocks Utah! The Great Saltair

Last night my husband and I went to the Rob Zombie, Hellbilly Deluxe 2 concert courtesy of Event Chaser. The concert was at The Great Saltair in Magna, Utah. This was my second time seeing Rob Zombie in concert and this time we had a blast!

Google Maps - The Great Saltair

Saltair is right on the shores of the Great Salt Lake on the west side of Salt Lake City. In 2005 several investors in the music industry purchased Saltair for the purpose of holding concerts and other events.
Saltair is less than 9 miles from my house. When you head back into Magna (east) you’ll find several fast food restaurants, a tiny five screen movie theater and a small but fabulous Mexican restaurant, El Habanero.

If you choose to keep going west, past Saltair, on I-80 you’ll drive into Tooele County where there are more restaurants, a truck stop and shopping centers. For the really adventurous…keep going another 100 miles or so and you’ll reach Wendover, NV. Located on the Utah/Nevada border, Wendover has casinos, hotels…and not much else.

The show started promptly at 7:30. Captain Clegg hit the stage. I had never even heard of Captain Clegg and honestly, I wasn’t very impressed. We hung out upstairs at the bar for the entire set. Next up was NecRomantix, who I’d also never even heard of. They sounded good, but we still hung out upstairs for the entire set.

After NecRomantix left the stage we went downstairs to try and get as close as we could to the stage. Saltair is a general admission venue; there are no seats (other than in the VIP area and a few tables located upstairs). So we knew it was going to be a battle to get close…and more of a battle to keep our spot.

We managed to get right up to the railing on the left side of the stage. I had to lean around a pole to be able to see the entire stage but it wasn’t a bad spot. Rob Zombie hit the stage, opening with the song Super Beast and it was instant crazy-madness-chaos. I was immediately pressed right up against the rails and people all around me were jumping and slamming into each other.

About a half hour into the show Rob Zombie hopped off the stage and walked over to our side of the stage. I was still pressed up against the railing and standing in front of a group of men in wheelchairs (they were on the other side of the railing, away from the crowds). Rob made his way over to those guys and started slapping hands (including mine!). It was so cool to have him right there in front of us…and to touch him. Pretty neat!

My husband had left me at that point; he was working his way into the crowd. So I gave up my spot against the rail and worked my way over to him. I’m kind of claustrophobic so I was kind of scared to be venturing out into the crowd like that but I did ok. We were getting slammed around and my feet were being stomped on and elbows were jabbing me all over, people were crowd surfing over head….but it was sooooo fun!

Here’s a set list of songs that I remember being played at the Rob Zombie Concert
What Lurks On Channel X
Super-Charger Heaven
Living Dead Girl
Demon Speeding
More Human Than Human (White Zombie cover)
Sick Bubble Gum
Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)
Scum of the Earth
American Witch
Thunder Kiss ‘65 (White Zombie cover)

During Thunder Kiss the band also did some teasers, playing riffs of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher”…but stopping before it was time for the lyrics to begin. They played the first part of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”.

Then they exploded right a back into Thunder Kiss, said their thank you and good night’s and exited the stage. We knew they weren’t done.

For their first encore, the guitar player came out and did an amazing guitar solo that ended with him playing the Star Spangled Banner…with his teeth. Then Rob came out and announced the next song: Werewolf Woman of the SS. And immediately after they played Lords of Salem.

They again exited the stage but the crowd wasn’t going anywhere. They were jumping and chanting “Zombie! Zombie! Zombie!” Of course they came back out and finished the show with Dragula.

By the time the show ended at 11 PM my ribs were sore from being pressed against the railing, being elbowed and yelling. My throat was scratchy and raw from screaming. My feet were killing me from being stomped on (and I totally wore these awesome boots…that weren’t so awesome by the end of the night).

And I was drenched in sweat, most of which was probably not my own. My hair was flat and sweaty, my make up had started to run…due to sweating. And it was worth it! Totally worth it! The last time being at a seated venue where he opened for Ozzy Osbourne. This time around it was much more fun…and I have bruises on my ribs to prove it.

Much thanks to EventChaser for the amazing Rob Zombie Tickets!

Great review… you always have such a great time at these rock concerts. I am so jealous, I would love to see 1/2 the concerts you do. Now that we are on Social Security, we don’t go as often as we used to, but I live through you because your reviews are so thorough! I love the video on your blog.. Thanks for sharing!!
