Capacity of Kinnick Stadium is over 70,000 attendees. The stadium was built in 1929 and using mules and horses to help with construction. Rumor has it, some of the horses died during construction and they were buried under the stadium. Spooky!

The stadium was renamed in 1972. The new name dedicated the stadium to Nile Kinnick, one of the most popular Iowa Hawkeye players thus far. He was the only University of Iowa college football player to receive the Heisman Trophy. Many statues are located around the stadium to show respect to the infamous Hawkeye champ.

Kinnick Stadium has some very unique features, including a bright pink locker room for the visiting teams. Coach Hayden Fry believed pink to be a “sissy” color and that the locker room color would calm the opposing team.

Even though the stadium is an older structure, many renovations have been completed in order to update the look. A large state-of-the-art scoreboard was installed in 2004. The stadium was also expanded from roughly 50,000 to the current 70,000 capacity. Concessions stands were also added. The most recent renovation took place this year; the natural grass turf was removed and replaced with Field Turf.

Staying near the stadium during football season is always a blast. The entire city is buzzing with happy fans and plenty of activities for the entire family. Both of these accommodations are only a few miles from Kinnick Stadium and a short drive. Parking at Kinnick Stadium fills up fast, since there are only over 4,000 spots. Carpooling, public transportation or a cab is going to be your best bet.
