I have loved David Sedaris for a long time, ever since I read one of his short story collections, Me Talk Pretty One Day. His collections are true stories based on his life experiences living in the United States and throughout Europe. The stories always have me laughing out loud, which usually causes some pretty strange looks from passerby. Again, RazorGator was generous enough to give me two David Sedaris tickets. This time, I took my friend Michelle, who I used to work with at a former job. She lives downtown within walking distance to the performance and she was generous enough to cook me pasta and sausage before we went down to Midland at AMC.
The Midland at AMC
The Midland by AMC is located in Downtown Kansas City’s Power and Light District, on the corner of 13th and Main. The original Midland Theatre was opening in 1927 and has been completely remodeled by AMC and development giant The Cordish Company. The renovations have kept the Midland’s beauty but have given it a few upgrades, including plasma TVs, a chandelier bar, and new plumbing fixtures. Besides comedians, The Midland also hosts concerts, private events, fundraisers, and more. The new Midland also has a bar and lounge attached next door - The Indie on Main.

David Sedaris - The Reading
Because David Sedaris is a humor author, not a stand-up comedian, his ‘performance’ was more of a reading. However, this doesn’t mean it was any less funny. Mr. Sedaris’ short fictional stories about a woman scorned along with his true story about jury duty had Michelle and I laughing the entire time. At the end of the reading, Mr. Sedaris also took questions from the audience, which dealt mostly with what he’s doing in the future, where he is living now (London), and his childhood.
After questions, David Sedaris recommended some other fiction and non-fiction books that he thought the audience would enjoy. These included selections from George Saunders and Lorrie Moore, along with a satirical atlas called Our Dumb World by fictional newspaper The Onion.
David Sedaris Book Signing
The best part of the entire evening, however, was getting to meet David Sedaris in person! He was signing books out in the lobby after the show and we were lucky enough to go out the right door and get a good spot in line. I had forgotten to bring a book of his from home so I went to a table in the lobby where a local bookseller (Rainy Day Books) was selling all of his books, audio books, and other items.
Mr. Sedaris was very friendly and asked me what I did for a living and who I came to the show with. He drew a turtle in my book and a kitty cat in Michelle’s. The only thing about the signing that I was disappointed about is the fact that we couldn’t take pictures with him. However, photos would have slowed the line down considerably and it’s understandable that they want to get as many people through the line as possible.
Kansas City Attractions and Restaurants
The Midland by AMC is located in Kansas City’s new Power and Light District and it has revitalized downtown Kansas City. The cornerstone of the Power and Light District is the KC Live! Block, which includes an open courtyard that is surrounded by bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. During the spring, summer and Early Fall, the KC Live! Stage hosts regular free concerts, including local band nights, country nights, and bigger names on Friday nights. The stage has hosted bands like Everclear, Dierks Bentley, and MC Hammer.
Some the restaurants in the P&L District include chains like Ted’s Montana Grill and Gordon Biersch, along with local businesses like ChefBurger and Tanner’s. At night, the KC Live! The block is filled with popular bars and nightclubs like Howl at the Moon piano bar, Lucky Strike bowling alley, and Mosaic nightclub.
Even though it was raining when we left and we had to walk home in the rain, it was totally worth it. It was a short walk back to Michelle’s and I was back home in no time, dreaming sweet dreams of turtles, jury duty, and e-mails that never seem to end.
If every event is this fun, I’m definitely looking forward to my next assignment for RazorGator!

It looks like you had a lot of fun! I really want to see David Sedaris live, I have almost all of his books and I know he would be hilarious to see in person. The Midland looks really cool too- do people ever have weddings there?
